Guest lecture

VERN' member and radio host Marko Bratoš gave a guest lecture for journalism students

At the undergraduate study of Journalism, in the course Radio Journalist - Host, a guest lecture was given by VERN' member and radio host Marko Bratoš.

"Try to make yourself irreplaceable. Because the more jobs you know, the more people you are worth," VERN's member and radio host Marko Bratoš , who was a guest at a lecture for third-year students of VERN's undergraduate study of Journalism , in the elective course Radio Journalist - Host, inspired his presentation.

Until recently, Bratoš, who was on this side of the bench himself, has made himself an indispensable member of the National Radio team with his work and talent. He began his career at Antena Zagreb as an audio producer, but, as he says, he quickly realized that there were many people in that job with the same or greater knowledge and experience, so he preferred to profile himself as a radio host.

"A good radio host, in addition to having a relatively pleasant voice and proper diction, also needs to be very passionate and enthusiastic about their work," said Bratoš, who is driven by great enthusiasm in his work, but also by constant work on himself. And that is what is most lacking among young journalists today, he says.

"People who apply for the job are uninformed and lack enthusiasm. Believe me, for a talented, hard-working journalist, there is flexibility in every budget."

As he himself says, he is not afraid to "copy" his more experienced colleagues, especially foreign and successful presenters. By observing them, Bratoš becomes more aware of himself and builds himself up day by day, but he notes that it is also important to be interesting, because if the listener is bored, they will change the radio station. The test for your own interestingness, according to Bratoš, is how interesting you are in any situation, for example, casually hanging out with friends. One of the formulas for avoiding monotony is to always find a new angle on each topic, not something worn out, but something thoughtful and interactive, even compelling for the listeners.

"Provoke a reaction with a more controversial statement, one that you don't necessarily agree with, to encourage people to come forward," advised future journalists, and perhaps presenters, Marko Bratoš, who hosts the show with host Nives Čanović, and they choose topics according to their own interests, because they know more about such topics and can talk about them more passionately.

Another quality of a good radio host is boldness, Bratoš emphasized, concluding that "it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission. If you have a good idea, make it happen, believe in yourself."

When it comes to criticism, our colleague advises: "Try to be grateful for criticism. Through criticism, we learn to become more independent, to reflect on what has been done, but also to build character. Both well-intentioned and malicious criticisms say more about the person giving them."
