The field trip was extremely beneficial for the students because it was a unique opportunity for them to learn detailed information from journalists and editors themselves.
Third-year students of VERN's undergraduate Journalism program visited the editorial office of Lider, the most successful business weekly in Croatia, as part of the Thematic Reporting course.
Our students and professor Dr. sc. Marija Slijepčević was welcomed by Lider's director Bojana Božanić Ivanović , who took them around the newsroom - showed them where everything was and introduced them to journalists and editors.
The keynote address was then taken by the deputy editor-in-chief of the print edition , Vanja Figenwald, who explained in more detail what Lider is, what it does, what topics it covers and how, who its target audience is, and what makes it competitive in the market. He emphasized that their "journalistic enthusiasm for deeper stories" has been going on for 18 years, during which they have always given their audience the best, and will continue to do so.
During the visit, the students asked numerous questions to learn more about the way journalists and editors work, who provided them with more detailed information about the content of this business weekly, explained what topics they create for the printed edition and what topics for the web, what the criteria are for choosing the cover, and how the Lider podcast, which is broadcast every Monday, is created.
This field trip was extremely useful for journalism students because it was a unique opportunity for them to learn detailed information about a specialized thematic weekly and what makes it different from daily newspapers, from the main protagonists themselves. At the same time, they learned that Lider also provides students with professional practice to help them explore the charms of business journalism in more depth and develop their career profiles. Finally, the answers and advice they received from journalists and editors will be very useful for their further development in the journalism profession.
