Course objectives
Students will be introduced to the concept of media within the media, creative and cultural industries. They will learn about individual media, their basic distinctive language and their position in media systems through historical development from Gutenberg to the emergence of the Internet. In the context of media convergence, they will gain insight into the difference between traditional and digital media. They will be introduced to the basics of the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, where the term "media industry" was coined. They will learn the basic determinants of different parts of the media industry as part of the creative industries. They will receive a general overview of this area in Croatia, the region, the EU and beyond, and gain insight into the impact of the contemporary social environment on the functioning and organization of individual segments of the media industry. They will learn to approach 'reading' individual media AV texts in a research and critical manner and to apply them practically.
